It’s Halloween and the perfect moment to add a little spooky sparkle to your French Halloween vocabulary.
Every year, I see learners mix up costume and déguisement, and it’s no wonder. In English, we wear costumes. In French, un costume means a man’s suit.
So if you want to talk about fancy-dress outfits or Halloween costumes, the word you need is un déguisement. And the verb to dress up in French is se déguiser.
The Verb Se Déguiser
A quick grammar treat for your French Halloween vocabulary list.
Se déguiser is a reflexive verb, which means it uses little pronouns like me, te, se.

| Je me déguise | I dress up |
| Tu te déguises | You dress up |
| Il / Elle se déguise | He / She dresses up |
To say who or what you are dressing up as, use se déguiser en.
- Je me déguise en vampire – I am dressing up as a vampire
- Elle se déguise en chat noir – She is dressing up as a black cat
